Jay and his wife, the former Paula Couch, graduated from Louisiana College in 1991-- Jay in Church Music, and Paula in Nursing. Married in August 1991, they moved to New Orleans that month, allowing Jay to pursue his Masters in Church Music with a concentration in Composition from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, which he earned in 1993. Jay and Paula were blessed with a daughter, Abby, on April 30th, 1999. She enjoys ballet and playing with her Cairn Terrier, Gracie. In the summer of 2004, Jay completed his second Masters, from LSU, in Composition. The Hellums are in the process of adopting a baby girl from China, Addison. Jay and Paula hope to have Addison home as soon as possible.
